Northridge, CA October 23, 2018 – The Resistance Northridge- Indivisible announced today that they are endorsing Tony Thurmond for State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The groups support Thurmond for his commitment to education and detailed strategic plan to make California’s Public Schools the best in the nation. At one time, California topped the list of rankings for schools in our nation, but now ranks 46th in per-pupil spending. Tony Thurmond has a proven track record, making education as a top priority while he served in the State Assembly.

“Tony Thurmond has spent his entire career fighting for children and is the only candidate with experience in public education, including service as a school board member. Public education is under constant attack from Betsy DeVos and others who seek to divert education funding to private entities. I have personally endorsed Thurmond because he is the fighter our children need to ensure that public education survives,” stated Carl Petersen, Education Lead for The Resistance Northridge-Indivisible.

“I'm proud that Northridge Indivisible has endorsed me for Superintendent of Public Instruction, and I'm proud to be running with the support of progressives across California who believe, as I do, that every child deserves a high quality public education," stated Tony Thurmond.

Since Thurmond’s 2014 election to the state legislature, he has done a multitude of actions for education. He banned for-profit charter schools in California and increased funding for early education, bilingual educations, and career technical training. He helped districts receive gun violence prevention training to keep students safe. Thurmond assisted in reducing bureaucracy and increased access to the free lunch program for approximately 400,000 students. He passed legislation moving millions of dollars from prisons to school districts to keep kids in school and out of the criminal justice system. He further passed legislation to give voting rights to student members of school boards. He also facilitated statewide roundtable to address combating hate in the classroom and LGBTQ bullying. Tony has a comprehensive detailed plan for making California’s public schools number one in the country.
