Los Angeles, CA August 21, 2020- Saturday, August 22, people from all walks of life who are determined to defend the essential services provided by the United States Postal Service—including our ability to vote by mail—will push back on the Trump administration's attacks by organizing grassroots action outside post offices. This is part of a nationwide mobilization taking place at post offices across the country.
The march will start in front of CNN on Sunset down a few blocks to the Post Office located at 1425 N Cherokee Ave. Walk from front of post office to the back where the mail trucks are. They will arrive at approximately 8:55 AM for a press conference. Mail carriers will begin to load their trucks and we will show our overwhelming support for them!
“Right now, especially, in one of the darkest times in our history, the United States Postal Service has always been that shining light. Something we know we could count on whether it is to receive medication, checks, deliveries for our small businesses, bills, and other important correspondence, it has always been reliable. I think it’s extremely important to show how much we support our postal workers and the service they provide as they are putting their lives at risk in a deadly pandemic that has already killed more than 170,000 Americans, to ensure we’re getting what we need in a timely manner,” Michelle Fowle, Founder and Chair of Northridge Indivisible stated. "Furthermore, the United States Postal Service has consistently delivered through heat, rain, snow, natural disasters, riots, anthrax threats, and now a pandemic and a criminal president and postmaster general who don’t seem to care who dies or who is hurt as long as they can stay in power and profit from peoples suffering. That is wrong. Today, we are making an unquestionable statement that we stand with our post office and its workers.
Annie Cho of Porter Ranch said that when she visited her local branch on August 7th there was only one clerk working when it used to be three or four. “We go for days without any mail,” Annie said “There are three of us living in our house and we’ve always had something in our mailbox.” Annie went further by demanding that the Postmaster General put the dismantled sorting machines back in working order and equip letter carriers with PPE. “Don’t mess with my mail!”
Groups including Indivisible, the Leadership Conference on Civil & Human Rights, MoveOn, NAACP, RuralOrganizing.org, Service Employees International Union, Vets for the People, and the Working Families Party are participating.
Those joining the actions will call on Postmaster General Louis DeJoy to resign in the wake of mail slowdowns and will call on Congress to "protect and save the post office from Donald Trump" and act to safeguard the integrity of our mail and elections. The actions will show Americans coming together to stand up for a postal system that connects us, that we rely on for medications, paychecks, and more, and that will literally be counted on to deliver democracy in the elections this fall.
We are committed to maintaining public health measures to practice safe protesting during the pandemic. All event participants are expected to wear a mask, maintain social distancing, and follow all local safety guidelines. Individual hosts are responsible for compliance with their own local laws and event requirements (including orders limiting the sizes of events.
